Event Greening Training

One of the main topics that came up at the Event Greening Workshops was the need for training to enable more people to actively participate and feel empowered.  We are however keen to hear from you about what training you need and what structure this should be.  Do we need short sessions (1-2 hours) or a full day training session?  Should it focus on specific industry sectors or be generic?

Greening looks to be the topic of the year just behind FIFA world cup in the event and exhibition industry. It is good to see the enthusiasm with which delegates participated in the Cape Town and the Johannesburg forum meetings. Let’s not follow the lead given to us in Copenhagen. Let’s continue actually doing something practical.

Having come from a Horticultural and landscaping background “green” is inherent in the discipline. My feelings are that for sustainable enviornmental growth in the event industry, training is of utmost importance. I have created and presented many public courses of varoius subjects within the green industry and fully appreciate the need for education.

However, in the event indsutry, there are so many varied disciplines that one cannot have a generic training course. Each sector, be it decor, food, technical, venues…whatever, needs training specific to that sector. Yes there are common areas to each of these but then there are a lot of specialized areas too.
It is a good thing that we continue with practical applications rather than simple lip-service since the face of eventing and the way we do things WILL change radically.
